Who We Are
The Five Tribes Freedmen are people of African-descent formerly enslaved in the Five Tribes or free black people in the nations. The term may also refer to descendants of original freedmen.
Emancipation came to the Five Tribes in 1866. Freedmen lived in dynamic communities from the 1860s up to Oklahoma statehood in 1907.
Today, Five Tribes Freedmen live within tribal lands of present-day Oklahoma and in a diaspora across the present-day United States.
Freedmen are interested in knowing more about their family and community stories. We are also dedicated to reclaiming our legacies within the Five Tribes and defining what it means to be Afro-Indigenous in the 21st Century.
